EYE DONATION Eyes are the most important organs in life . We can see this world with the eyes, all our achievements, enjoyments are by means of our eyes. Imagine life without vision! The darkness is so scary! Remember the moments when power fails for few moments at night while we are working! Do you know there are thousands and thousands of people who have long power failure and darkness in there life? They are deprived of all visual enjoyments, they are deprived of many opportunities in spite of being otherwise fit. They are all our corneal blind brothers and sisters. What can we do for them? We certainly feel like doing something. But we don’t know what exactly to be done. Should we give them few rupees or some food? How long will it help them? Will it help them to contribute for living with honour? in building healthy society? Certainly not! Here is a novel way of helping our blind brothers and sisters. Donation is a great virtue in our culture. To snatch something from others is vikruti (abnormal) , to earn for ourselves is prakruti ( normal ), but to give something to others is a supreme virtue (sanskriti). We are all citizens of the nation where Raja Bali donated his whole empire, where Raja Harishchandra did same thing without hesitation and Maharathi Karna donated his vital kavach kundala to Indra. We are small people and may not do that great things but certainly we can do small thing from our side which can turn out to be great gift for someone, some one who is corneal blind…….. All we have to do is to donate eyes after death. To declare during lifetime that you are willing to donate eyes. After death these eyes can be successfully transplanted to the corneal blind person. It can change their life, it can enlighten their life, help them to live with pride and self esteem. Do you know, in spite of having so rich heritage of donation in our country, we have very small number of eye balls available for transplant? There are long waiting lists of corneal blinds in our hospitals . Many of our blind brothers and sisters are waiting for the call of the doctors for corneal transplant. But we don’t get the eye balls only because the people are not donating the eyes after their death… isn't it a something that needs to change? Are we ignorant about some facts about eye donation? If that is the case here is a detailed information about eye donation. Please go through it and make up your mind to donate your eyes. Here is the great chance of seeing the world even after death. Living even after death, achieving great punya, great satisfaction. It is not only important to declare the donation of your eyes but it is equally important to motivate the others to do so. It is also important to motivate the next person of any dead person to allow the donation of eyes of his relatives . Yes ! He does have right to give consent to do so, unless the dead person has expressed his unwillingness. But this has to be done urgently, just within 2 hours after death. Thus by donating your eyes you can enlighten only 2 lives, but by motivating thousands of people to donate eyes you can literally enlighten thousands of lives. And surely THE ALMIGHTY will enlighten yours and your beloved ones life with similar thousands of rays of happiness. Facts about eye donation Eye is like small egg and it is removed as it is from its socket. Eyelids are closed thereafter and the dead person's face looks perfectly normal , without any disfigurement. The front part of this eyeball that is cornea is only transplanted to the blind person whose blindness is only because of corneal opacity. There is a great need of such eyeballs as there are long waiting lists of such blind persons. There is no age bar for eye donation. Persons using glasses or contact lenses or who have underwent cataract or retinal surgery can also donate eyes But if person died because of cancer, infection, AIDS, hepatitis, burns then his eyes may be taken out but can not be used for transplantation, as it is dangerous to the recipient but can be used for research purpose. A person can fill eye donation form and give consent for his eye donation One can also give consent for eye donation of his dead close relatives. Transplantation surgery will be done by expert surgeons free of cost. Nobody in this science era will believe in getting cremated or buried with body intact to secure place in heaven, on the contrary by donating eyes, his seat in heaven will be better secured.
