LASIK Surgery: Everything You Need to Know

Many people ask questions about LASIK surgery before they decide to go for it. Here are the answers to the most common questions.



What is LASIK operation?

LASIK is an operation done on the surface of the eye. With the help of excimer lasers, the front part of the eye is reshaped. This corrects the patient's refractive error, which means the spectacle number is removed.

Can anyone undergo this surgery?

No. It depends on various tests that we do at Dr. Aaphale Eye Hospital on the patient's eye.

What is the right age for LASIK surgery?

Normally, by the age of 19 to 21 years, the spectacle number becomes stable. Once the number is stable, a person can go for LASIK surgery. It can be done up to the age of 45 to 50 years.

How much number can be corrected?

This depends on the thickness of the cornea. But if the thickness allows, LASIK can correct:

  • Spherical number: -2 to -9/10, and +1 to +4 o

  • Cylindrical number: -3.5/4

This may vary from person to person, based on the individual eye.

What type of anesthesia is used?

Topical anesthesia, in the form of eye drops, is used during the surgery.

Does the surgery hurt?

There may be little discomfort, but there is no severe pain.

How long does the surgery take?

The surgery takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Are both eyes operated at the same time?

Yes. Both eyes are operated one after the other, immediately.

When should you stop using contact lenses before surgery?

It is best to stop using contact lenses 15 days before the LASIK surgery.

What precautions should be taken after surgery?

After surgery, touching or rubbing the eyes is not allowed for one week. Washing the face and taking a hair bath should also be avoided for a week.

Does it hurt after the surgery?

Not much.

Do you need to wear dark goggles?

No dark goggles are needed. Transparent protective spectacles will be given instead.

When can normal work be started again?

Watching TV and reading on a PC can be started from the next day. Routine studies and office work can be started after 3 days.
